CAMPOUT UPDATE
MUST DO: If you are going on the campout, you MUST register here, even if you already signed the paper form at the meeting or told Mr. Tillotson you wanted to go (click the link above or register at the troop website, www.bsatroop412.com) There are 14 boys who said they are going but are not in the system yet. We must have campers registered online to assure we have enough drivers, tents, and complete emergency contact information.
We've been UP-GRADED!
We have a new campsite destination, that will allow for an optional "leg" down river that includes another set of rapids and another 1.5 to 2 hrs of river fun before landing BACK AT OUR CAMPSITE! See new Maps below.
URGENT note: We do not currently have enough DRIVERS to accommodate all the scouts who wish to participate!!! Please consider going and Driving, even if you choose to spend an air-conditioned day antique-shopping or taking advantage of the area outlet malls instead of Canoeing.
COST:
Same as last year. $50 per person. This includes Canoe/Kayak rental, lunch and BBQ dinner on Saturday.
When and Where to Meet
Meet at the Scout Hut on Killion (across from Walnut Elementary) at 5:00pm. We will leave at 5:30. You must be in class A uniform. You may not leave on the trip unless you are wearing your Scout Shirt.
Where We Are Going
Oklahoma is out, New Braunfels (Guadalupe River) is IN! The car trip is about 30 minutes longer than to Oklahoma.
There are 4 major sets of rapids or falls, and the river is running swift and wide.
The campground is the "Double Rockin' R", located just downriver from the Gruene Crossing in New Braunfels, TX.
If you have a GPS or sat. nav. system, the co-ordinates for the Campsite is roughly:
N 29º 43'34.4"
W 098º 06'34.7"
NEW UPDATED Directions To our Campsite are: (from raft provider web site)
• I-35 South past Austin towards New Braunfels
• EXIT #189 (46 West) Loop 337
• Turn RIGHT onto Loop 337 (46 West)
• Continue on Loop 337/Hwy 46 2 miles.
• Turn right on River Terrace before crossing the Guadalupe.
• The Double Rockin' R is beside Gruene Harley-Davidson
The Float Trip
Note: We are not using "toobs" on this trip, but inflatable one-man and two-man canoes/kayaks. The Canoes are inflatable due to the rocky bottom of the river here.
You'll get paddles and Personal Floatation Devices (life-vests), but if you need to waterproof anything in a dry-sac, you should bring your own. Also suggested are ties for Glasses or sunglasses.
Leave your iPods and electronics at home!!! If you bring a camera, make sure it's water-proof and/or disposable!
Our itinerary is to leave from the camp area and be shuttled by the provider to the First Crossing by 9AM Saturday morning. If you're not overnight-ing with us Friday night, you should meet us in camp on Saturday.
The trip is about 4 hours long from the First Crossing to the Gruene Crossing. (The historic town of Gruene is just up the hill from the take-out point. We'll probably do lunch here.
After lunch we will continue down the river back to hour camp, which will take another 1.5 to 2 hours.
After a fun/relaxing day we'll have BBQ in camp.
Map of Gruene Hint: Moms or Dads not into Canoeing and not wishing to do the float trip can find lots to do here while you wait! (Assuming you're not organizing lunch!)
Food
Everyone should bring a sack dinner to eat on the way Friday night. With a 4 hour drive, we will only make one pit stop and won't have time to buy dinner. Food for Saturday lunch and dinner is being provided by the troop. Scouts need to bring a non-cooked breakfast for Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to Mr. Nelson for serving as BBQ Smoker-Master.
We need some help from any Adult Leaders who are not Canoeing the river to organize lunch.
Please e-mail Mr. Tillotson if you'd like to help!
