Where We Are
Going
We are going to Hidden
Cove Park, on the east side of Lake Lewisville in Frisco. It
is only about 25 miles away – NO LONG CAR RIDES!!!! http://www.hiddencovepark.com/Hidden_Cove_Park.html
Our campsite will be the
“south peninsula camping area” which is just above
shelter sites 62, 63, 64 etc. on the campsite map http://www.marinequest.net/PDF/HiddenCove-Camping-Map.pdf
We have the entire peninsula and
the pavilion for the entire weekend. There is parking nearby; there are
also bathrooms nearby.
What we are doing
There are two major
activities/merit badge opportunities planned:
- Waterskiing:
we will have a couple of ski boats available, and the kids will have a
chance to learn to ski. Thanks to Janine Amy, who will be Merit Badge
counselor for this – and whose family is providing one of the
ski boats. We hope to have time for every boy who wants to try to ski
to get a chance.
- Fishing:
a Lake Lewisville fishing guide (Bill Llewellyn) has volunteered to
take boys out on a pontoon boat in the morning. Bill is an expert on
Lewisville and will teach the kids to fish – and to clean
what they catch. He will also provide fish for the Fish Fry Saturday
night (more on that below). Bill will provide rods/reels/artificial
lures. But anyone wanting to fish from the peninsula bank should bring
his own rod/reel and bait. (The Troop will provide a few extra rods and
bait just in case.). Kurt Harms will be the Merit Badge counselor for
fishing.
We also are doing a service project
at the Park – cleaning up debris and trash on the hiking
trails (which was washed up during the June/July flooding, when Lake
Lewisville was 12 feet high. Note: this
will require work gloves – and long pants/blue jeans are
highly recommended.
When and Where
to Meet (****NOTE: this is different this time****)
There are TWO OPTIONS. Since the
location is so close – and because Frisco traffic is so
horrendous on Friday nights, we are going to make Friday night camping
“optional”, i.e. those people that want to get two
nights in can come up on Friday night and fight the traffic, but anyone
else can just get there by 7:30 am on Saturday (it’s just a
40 minute drive at most) – and still participate in all the
activities. So CHOOSE ONE:
1) Meet
at the Scout Hut on Killion (across from Walnut Elementary) at 5:00pm.
We will leave at 5:30. The trip is only about 25 miles from St. Monica,
but traffic up the Tollway and west through Frisco is murderous on
Friday nights, so if you’d like a relaxing Friday and still
be able to enjoy a full day of water sports, you can take advantage of
Option 2:
OR
2) Drive
up on your own (or arrange a Car Pool) to Hidden Cove Park EARLY on
Saturday morning. If you want to be on a boat in the morning when
skiing and fishing are best, you should be at the campsite by no later
than 7:30 am. That means you should leave your home no later than 6:45
am.
- Friday evening: Each
Scouts provides his own sack meal (if coming on Friday)
- Saturday
breakfast: Each Scout provides his
own non-cooked breakfast (if he camped Friday night)
- Saturday lunch
and snacks*: Each Patrol provides
its own lunch and snacks/drinks
- Saturday
dinner*: The Troop provides the
“Fish, Foil and Fire” (on the pavilion grill), each
patrol provides their own side dishes, drinks, etc.
- Sunday
breakfast: Each Scout provides his
own non-cooked breakfast
*each patrol needs to appoint a
grubmaster at Monday’s meeting and plan the meals
- Sunscreen/Bug Spray
- Fishing rod/reel and bait
- Sturdy water shoes. Old tennis
shoes or school shoes will work. Flip flops and sandals are not
acceptable.
- A hat, preferably wide brimmed.
- Towel
- Blue jeans/long pants + work gloves
for Saturday service project
- Change of clothing for Saturday
night
- Tent (buddy up to be sure you have
one)
- Flash light, lantern, etc.
